These short talks will focus on selected activities or initiatives that are playing a role in moving polar interoperability forward.

The term interoperability is a much used term, however a clear definition of the concept and what members of various communinties expect and need from "interoperability". Results from the workshop Survey and other resources will be used as a foundation for dicussion.

Technical perspective (combined discussion in Great Hall); Governance, policy, funding, ethics etc. (Room P)

Many projects, initiatives, platforms and technologies have been identified leading up to this workshop. This working session will focus on identifying the role that these entities are playing or might play in achieving interoperability as defined in Working Session 1

Day Two - 9 November 2016

A major component of interoperability is the use of protocols, standards and specifications (PSS), even if these are being used to transform or mediate data and information between systems. This session will focus on identifying and documenting PSS that are in use or emerging to provide a detailed review. Some thematic groups will focus on more technical aspects of PSS, while other would focus on research or operational protocols (e.g. ethics protocols in relation to interoperability)

This session will focus less on technology and more on the context of interopeability including governance, funding, ethics, sharing across scales and knowledge domains etc. (e.g. Theme 3, 5,6 ). Groups will self organize based on specific interests (i.e. thematic groups can merge if desired, using themes to guide discussion).  The group will be asked to develop governance/sustainability/practice  scenarios assuming varying levels of resources.

Big Hall A, Big Hall B, Rooms N, O, P (as needed)

This session will focus on connections between nodes identified in the system whether those be technical (e.g. data sharing using a particularl protocol) or other (e.g. flows of funding, connecting communities).  Participants will be mixed into at least two groups wih a range of expertise in each group and will be asked to develop a model system based on results of prior sessions.

Synthesis Session 2:

preliminary statements and recommendationss

This session will focus on establishing an outline for the workshop report including preliminary statements and recommendations for each theme and for the workhop as a whole. This will be used as a foundation for broader consultation following the workshop.
