8th April 20:00-23:00 UTC

During the Third Polar Data Forum (PDF) held in Helsinki in November of 2019, members of the Polar Data Community gathered to share information and knowledge and to make practical progress towards greater data sharing and interoperability. PDF III followed on a series of meetings that have resulted in continuing advancements in the areas of federated search, identification and development of shared vocabularies and formal semantics, data policy, community building and other topics. Since PDF III, the dialogue has continued. In March and early April, the Arctic data community met during the online Arctic Observing Summit (https://aos2020agenda.org/). The Standing Committee on Arctic Data Management (SCADM) and members of the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) Program have met regularly. There is broad agreement between these groups and the IASC-SAON Arctic Data Committee (ADC) that meeting more frequently will help us to continue making practical progress on our shared goals.

During these challenging times, meeting in person is not feasible.  However, recent online events have demonstrated that we can successfully collaborate using virtual tools.

We would like to invite you to join us online on 8th April 20:00-23:00 UTC to continue our efforts to enhance polar data sharing and interoperability.  This is an online workshop in a planned series of bi-monthly online workshops convened by the ADC, SCADM, SOOS, the Arctic Observing Summit Working Group 4, the Global Cryosphere Watch, and the World Data System on behalf of the polar data community.

Due to the constraints of our virtual platform, participation is limited. Registration is required. Connection information for the virtual meeting will be provided to registered participants closer to the event time.

To register, please complete the form found here

Aligning Artic and Antarctic efforts on semantics

Chantelle Verhey

The World Data System International Technology Office has some resources (principally Chantelle’s time) to put into aligning the semantics and vocabularies used by the Arctic and Antarctic research communities. Here we’ll discuss the planned work and invite volunteers to get involved.

Indexing data centres that already support schema.org

At the last meeting, we started populating a list of polar URLs already providing schema.org so we can have a look and see how they fit with the guidance we are zeroing in on. Please add your schema-ready data centres to this spreadsheet, if you didn’t do it last time.

Matrix of Mandatoriness

Pip Bricher

In December, we outlined a series of use cases to describe the kinds of queries we expect people to make of a federated search tool. Then, in January, we started talking about how to assign mandatory fields to each of those kinds of queries and Pip volunteered to make a first attempt at summarising which fields are required to support the different kinds of queries. A cleaned-up version of that list of use-cases is here. Please look through it before the meeting and suggest changes.

Time, Space, and Citations

Ruth Duerr + a volunteer schema.org guru

We had productive discussions in January about how to best capture various kinds of spatial and temporal information in schema.org metadata. A question on how to represent z-dimension data was passed onto the Science on Schema.org group’s GitHub page, and this conversation is worth a read before we meet. In this session, we’ll confirm the tentative decisions we made last time (we’ll circulate the summary in the next few days), and add  them into the template we made in Helsinki.

Tea Break

Stand up. Wriggle. Have a nice cup of tea.

Variable Measured

Ruth Duerr

The Science on Schema.org group has made progress on capturing information about “variable measured” or “parameter”. In this session, Ruth will present on the status of those discussions and some of the examples they’re using to frame the debate about how best to be inclusive of the kinds of data we hope to be able to represent in schema.org. SOSO has three options that vary in their expressivity and understandibility, for us to consider and approve (or not).

Citations

How are we going to capture citation information in schema.org? Let’s make a couple of decisions and add them to our template.

b. Breakout Working Group 3: Policy. Hosted by SCADM, SOOS and the Arctic Data Committee (Peter Pulsifer and Stein Tronstad are leads)

1. Summary of ADC and polar community activities (for new participants, 5 minutes)

2. Discussion of models for ADC/polar community engagement with new Arctic-focused projects (e.g. CoObs, Arctic Passion) (30 minutes)

3. Review and completion of first iteration of polar data policy alignment document

4. Next steps for polar data policy process including strategy for collaboration with ASDI and  Arctic Council.
